Game 9

 16/11/24 - Development Cup

AFC 5 - 2 Red Sea FC

After a week off, Attenborough started their campaign in the Development Cup group stage at home to Red Sea FC, a club formed in the last couple of years and made up of refugee and migrant communities from Eritrea and Sudan.

Red Sea's results had picked up in recent weeks and they came out the blocks full of enthusiasm and forced a controversial early goal. The ball appeared out of play down their left flank but the visitors played to the whistle and put a good ball into the box for Ashraf Abdallah to fire home after just four minutes. Familiar territory for Attenborough, this the third game in a row they'd fallen behind within the first ten, but they typically responded well and were in front before the end of the quarter, Will Humphriss converting a close-range headed chance from a corner before George Pursglove had the freedom of Broxtowe to fire the Blues into the lead.

Attenborough, supported by a season-high crowd, were in control for the remainder of the first half and gained deserved reward for their superiority when Louis Smith fired in the third shortly before the break.

It was by no means plain sailing for the home team in the second half, however, with Red Sea giving their all in an attempt to save the game. Only seconds after the interval, Reece Caine prevented it going 3-2 with an excellent headed goal-line clearance, but the away team continued to force Fin Haywood into several good saves before an accurate header from Ahmed Alnwour found the net in the 54th minute.

Attenborough are nothing but resilient though and, ten minutes later, Humphriss, who produced a man-of-the-match display in the middle of the back three, nestled a looping header into the top corner to bag his second of the game and give breathing space once again.

Moments later, the game was sealed after a lovely move featuring Simon Savage was confidently finished off by Ollie Mee. This was Attenborough's sixteenth goal in their last three matches and, with another weekend off upcoming, we are back in league action against West Bridgord at The Strand on the 30th November.
