Game 22
05/04/25 – League
Cotgrave 0 – 7 AFC
Attenborough shrugged off the disappointment of last week’s
title decider with a superb performance away at Cotgrave. Despite missing star
man Luke Smith and the suspended Ollie Mee, the Blues turned in an attacking
display to excite the travelling fans.
Having enjoyed little luck of late, two goals having been ruled
out in the last couple of weeks, George Pursglove was back on the goal trail with
a fantastic opener after ten minutes, volleying across the goalkeeper from just
inside the area. And Pursglove soon added another assist for the season when his corner was
powered home via Will Humphriss’ head.
Attenborough were already three up before the half hour
mark, Louis Smith’s shot falling to the feet of Lewis Caine to tap home. Louis
produced a thrilling cameo from the left-hand side, ably replacing Luke and he
topped of his first-half display with a stunning solo goal to make it four, skipping
past several challenges before firing into the roof of the net, unfortunately
he was injured in doing so and his morning was cut short.
As well as the attacking talent on show, Attenborough’s
defence, boosted by a rare appearance from Ali Lee, was rock-solid in dealing
with long balls on a windy day, while Lewis Sanderson again showed his tenacious
side with some thunderous tackles.
There was no let up from the Boro after half time and another
quality goal made it five-nil. Colm Keegan-O’Kane rampaged up the left-hand
side and provided a perfect cross for the returning Brad Greatorex to caress a
header into the far corner.
Brad then delivered a cross which was skilfully controlled by Harry Morgan and, after some quick feet, driven into the net. Morgan again showing real quality when it mattered. The scoring was wrapped up in the 66th minute as Greatorex set Lewis Caine through and the skipper made no mistake in scoring his second of the game and Attenborough's seventh.
Despite there being no more goals in the final quarter,
there were still two memorable moments. The first coming when Lennon Fendick,
kindly filling in as linesman, tripped trotting backwards and went spectacularly
arse over tit, three complete rotations were counted before he came to rest on
his back with his little legs in the air like a cast sheep.
The only thing that could have topped the morning off was a
rare Reece Caine goal and, having gone up front for the last few minutes, he found
himself with a golden opportunity. Caine calmly paused and measured his lob over
the goalkeeper to seemingly absolute perfection, but just as he began to wheel
away in celebration the bounce of the ball took his attempt inches wide of the
post. Another head in hands moment for Reece.
We travel to Newark next week to face AFC Warriors for the
final league game. A point needed to secure second place.
