Game 23

12/04/25 – League

AFC Warriors 4 – 1 AFC

In complete contrast to last week, Attenborough capitulated in tame fashion faced with a trip to AFC Warriors and now may ultimately finish third for the second season running, despite looking to be in a two-horse race for the most of this campaign, which has to go down as disappointing given in so many areas the Blues appeared have improved this time around.

Both away defeats this season have come on long trips to Newark and there’s no avoiding the fact that availability for these games he been poor compared to other matches, something which certainly doesn’t help, but, while our depleted squad gave their all in a narrow loss on the road to Newark and Sherwood a few weeks ago, this simply wasn’t the case this time around, some well-below par displays matched with half-hearted effort proving a recipe for disaster.

A couple of well-worked goals from Warriors saw them two-up within the first quarter of the game and Attenborough did show some fight for a short while after that, George Pursglove stealing in to nod in from a Reece Caine freekick and get one back in the 35th minute, before the only move of any quality the visitors produced all day saw Brad Greatorex release Harry Morgan shortly before half time, Morgan beating his defender but denied by a smart save.

Unfortunately, the second half saw another tame start from Attenborough and Warriors restored their two-goal cushion with about 25 minutes remaining and never looked in any serious danger thereafter, Attenborough having chances from corners but very little worked from open play, and a fourth goal shortly before the end put the Boro out of their misery.

While this was such a low point on a season it does need bearing in mind that the like of this has not been seen throughout the entirety of the previous games, if anything this glaring aberration showed up how committed and how good the squad has been for the majority of matches.

Some strong words after full-time won’t have fallen on deaf ears and we have the perfect opportunity for revenge against Warriors on Cup Final day, which is our next and final outing on May 3rd at Hucknall Town FC (11am ko).
